Drouin Rotarians and Drouin West Cemetery Trust members at the early stages of construction of the new gazebo
Visitors to the Drouin West Cemetery have not had anywhere to sit undercover, until now.
The Drouin West Cemetery Trust, with major involvement of the Drouin Rotary Club, has built a covered rotunda with seating and a concrete floor made possible through financial contributions from the Rotary Club of Drouin, Rotary Foundation District grant's program, the Drouin & District Community Bank and the Trust itself.
Led by Trust member and Rotarian Bill Petschack, teams of club and Trust members build a very sturdy ’skeleton’ structure onto which a roof was placed, followed by laying the concrete and, in the near future, building the seats. In time, the area will be part-enclosed to protect visitors from the elements.
“It has been difficult for visitors to comfortably spend time at the cemetery when the weather is not the best” said Bill Petschack. “And our secretary has not had a comfortable place to sit with families to discuss options for internments and memorialisation”.
“This project is a great example of a real community project which would not have been possible without the generous support of Rotary Foundation and the Drouin Rotary Club and, our Community Bank” he added.
The project was completed for Christmas visitors.
